Late last year, I had the pleasure of visiting Jamaica for my birthday and the holidays with my family. This trip held deep personal significance for me, as I had always wanted to explore the island. Known for giving the world some of the most talented and influential people, Jamaica exudes magic and beauty that I was excited to experience firsthand. This journey became the heart and soul of my latest film project, "Blessings."
One of the most unforgettable experiences from my trip was celebrating my birthday in Jamaica. For the first time in 31 years, I woke up to sunshine on my birthday (a contrast to the usual wet and rainy London). We spent the day on a boat, swimming in the crystal-clear sea, and in the company of my family and friends. That evening, my family organised a wholesome dinner, making it a birthday I'll always cherish.
Another highlight was rafting along the River Grande. We floated on bamboo rafts down the most beautiful river I’ve ever seen, stopping along the way to eat delicious local dishes like curry crayfish, curry goat, jerk chicken, breadfruit, and plantain, all cooked on the coals by a lovely woman named Belinda. Speaking of food, Jamaica’s culinary scene was incredible. Every meal was an adventure. I had the pleasure of enjoying traditional dishes like ackee and saltfish, mackerel rundown, and various hearty soups. A cooking lesson further deepened my appreciation for Jamaican cuisine. The flavours were bold, vibrant, and comforting, much like the island itself.
The "Blessings" project was inspired by the beauty and vibrant communities I encountered in Jamaica. I wanted to capture the island’s lush greenery and the charming small businesses adorned with hand-painted artwork. These elements were important in shaping the visual narrative of the shoot. I aimed to showcase the authentic beauty of Jamaica, from its stunning landscapes to its warm and welcoming people.
Working with local talent and businesses for the "Blessing's" project was an enriching experience. Our producer, Carleene, was instrumental in making the process smooth and enjoyable. Her extensive network on the island connected us with amazing individuals who brought their unique perspectives and talents to the project. The models were street-cast and their personalities and diverse experiences embodied the spirit of Jamaica. The blend of still photography and film allowed us to seamlessly convey the essence of Jamaica, creating a multifaceted portrayal of the island’s beauty and culture.
With "Blessings," I hope to convey a message of celebration and appreciation. The project is a tribute to the beauty of Jamaica, its people, and its culture. Through the visuals, I wanted to share the magic of the island, hoping viewers feel the same sense of wonder and connection that I experienced during my time there. The island’s spirit of resilience, creativity, and beauty shines through, reminding us all of the blessings that come from exploring new places and embracing their stories.
I would like to thank the talented creative team that brought my vision to life, my amazing Ahluwalia team, my Mum and loved ones for making Jamaica a place etched in my heart. I hope you enjoyed learning the story behind 'Blessings' and will watch the film through a new
lens of meaning.
